I have the privilege of not only serving the good people of St. James in North Easthope, but I also serve part-time as the Lutheran Chaplain on the campus of Wilfred Laurier University (also check out our website lutheransconnect.com for further information about issues concerning youth across Canada). In my role as Chaplain, I organize events on campus highlighting social justice issues such as Human Trafficking; Refugee Rights; and HIV/AIDS Day.
Here is my sermon I preached in the Keffer Chapel for 'Human Trafficking' on October 18th, 2011.
"If it is true that God’s true wisdom is communicated only by the Spirit, then I know it also to be true that I do not possess the Spirit in its fullness, so I can’t expect to have this wisdom. I can’t understand the acts of violence and coercion of one human being on another.
Who are the perfect? The spiritually mature? For Paul, the first step in understanding is through Jesus Christ who was crucified. Christ is the revelation - the revealer of God - the one who by all that he achieved by word and deed and spirit revealed God to us.
Without revelation there is no reason or reasoning.
The philosopher Kant said, “Reason without sense is empty; sense without reason is blind”. Sound too philosophical? Yes, but it is scriptural. The reality is that spiritual wisdom is spiritually discerned. Only those whose minds and hearts are open to receive what God is willing to give - Only they will be more likely to be given the eternal
secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification.
Reality must reveal itself to make itself known…
Those who think of themselves as knowledgeable…. Those who are not prepared to sit down and wonder and ponder about the world and it’s needs are unlikely to achieve the kind of understanding that St. Paul is pleading with us to have.
If that is the case, then we will be more unlikely to understand the wonderful significance of the Cross or the Lord of Glory.
There is an old Chinese proverb… “The closed fist can receive nothing” Neither can the closed mind or heart. Such people cheat themselves.
The issue of ‘human trafficking’ is one that should cause us to sit down and ponder our need to understand reality. Through discernment and the wisdom that is communicated by the Holy Spirit - thanks be to God for this gift. Amen.
